Many people only buy a diamond once or twice in their lifetimes, meaning that deciding which one to get can be confusing and overwhelming. When you decide to buy your diamond online, it can make it that much more complicated for the uneducated consumer. There is a lot to know about diamonds that need to be considered when you make your final purchase. This isn’t to say that you need to see the diamond in person before you hit the “purchase” button. In fact, it’s entirely possible to purchase one online with confidence as long as you know what you’re looking for. Here is a brief online diamond buying guide, to help you find the perfect diamond.

Shape

Different people have different preferences for shape, so the most important thing to keep in mind with respect to the shape of the diamond is the taste of the person who will receive it in the end. There are a variety of different cuts, such as round, princess, and radiant, just to name a few.

Clarity

The higher the clarity grade, the clearer the diamond is. Every diamond has some minor imperfections, but some are larger than others. When you are looking online you want to find a diamond within your price range that has a high clarity grade in order to be sure that you’re purchasing the very best you can afford.

Cut

Not to be mistaken with shape, the cut of a diamond will affect its quality. Basically speaking, a well cut diamond will sparkle and shine much better than one that is poorly cut. Jewelers tend to use the term “brilliance” when referring to how shiny a diamond is.

Color

Diamonds that have no color, or very little color, are white, and will receive a high grade. Diamonds that have a hint or shade of other color to them will receive low grades.

Carat Weight

A carat is a measurement of weight specific to gems. The higher the carat, the weightier or larger the diamond.
